Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon is a 2006 mockumentary directed by Scott Glosserman and starring Nathan Baesel, Angela Goethals, Robert Englund (aka Freddy Krueger, of course), Ben Pace, Britain Spellings, Bridgett Newton, Kate Lang Johnson, and Scott Wilson. The movie takes place in Glen Echo, Maryland and follows journalist Taylor Gentry (Angela Goethals) and her cameramen as they document Leslie Vernon's (Nathan Baesel) attempt to become a serial killer that rivals villains such as Jason Voorhees, Freddy Krueger, and Michael Myers (who are real in this movie). When we first meet this aspiring legendary slasher, he seems pretty fun and likable, showing off his pet turtles and offering to do magic tricks for Taylor and her crew. Throughout the movie, he's so excited about his mission that you can't help but root for him, even though his goal is to do terrible things.
I really enjoyed Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon, and I wish that I had found out about this movie when it first came out instead of nine years later. The actors were great, especially Nathan Baesel as the most likable serial killer ever, and I loved the idea of a film crew following a guy around while he tries to kill a bunch of teenagers. The movie was entertaining and made me laugh a few times, so I would definitely watch it again. : )
My rating: 8/10
