Since I haven't gone anywhere in two months, I decided to take some free courses while I'm staying safe at home...my library system lets members take courses on UniversalClass.com for free, and when I saw that they offered a UFO Studies class, of course I had to take it. The course consists of nine lessons, covering topics like Roswell, alien abductions, and crop circles, and even though I already know a ton about UFOs/aliens, I learned a lot and ended up with a final grade of 98%, so I think that officially makes me a UFO expert. 😉 If you're interested in taking the course, you can find it here:

Aliens Like Us with Rhys Darby
As someone who loves Rhys Darby and all things alien, I was excited to find out that Rhys Darby has a new podcast about aliens. Aliens Like Us with Rhys Darby was released on Spotify today, and it's a fun look at extraterrestrials featuring UFO news, expert guests, and more. In the first episode ("What Are They?"), Rhys, co-host Leon "Buttons" Kirkbeck, and producer Ethan Edenberg discuss recent reports of cattle mutilation, talk about MUFON and Area 51 with actor Henry Zebrowski, and share a real report from a contactee.
I really enjoyed the first episode of Aliens Like Us...Rhys was delightful as always, and I could listen to him talk about anything, but I especially enjoy listening to him talk about aliens. I'm excited to start off my Wednesday mornings with this podcast and will be eagerly awaiting new episodes. If you're anything like me, you'll love Aliens Like Us, so head over to Spotify and give it a listen and a follow now. 👽

Movie Spotlight: Evil Alien Conquerors
Evil Alien Conquerors is a 2003 movie starring Michael Weston, Chris Parnell, Diedrich Bader, Tyler Labine, Elden Henson, Phil LaMarr, and Beth Grant. Two evil aliens, My-ik (Diedrich Bader) and Du-ug (Chris Parnell), from a planet called Kabijj are sent to Earth with a mission: to behead all humans within two days and take over the world. Will they be able to accomplish this seemingly impossible task, or will they keep getting too distracted by women and Smirnoff Ice to destroy mankind?
I watched Evil Alien Conquerors a few years ago, and I really liked it, so I decided to watch it again and write about it on my blog. I love Chris Parnell, and he's great in this, as is Diedrich Bader. Evil Alien Conquerors is silly, entertaining, and original, so give it a chance if that's the kind of thing you like. : )

Movie Spotlight: Arrival
Arrival is a 2016 movie starring Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner, Forest Whitaker, Michael Stuhlbarg, Tzi Ma, and Mark O'Brien. When a dozen spacecrafts appear around the world, a linguistics professor (Amy Adams), an Army Colonel (Forest Whitaker), and a physicist (Jeremy Renner) team up to decipher the language of the extraterrestrials in order to find out what they want.
I usually don't enjoy Oscar-nominated movies (I'm more into comedies and horror movies), but Arrival is an exception, and it deserves all the critical acclaim it has received. The performances were excellent, and the aliens were some of the most realistic-looking aliens I've ever seen in a movie. If you're looking for a typical alien invasion movie (aliens being jerks and destroying everything), you might want to skip Arrival, but if you want to see a captivating, visually stunning sci-fi movie, Arrival is a great choice.

Book Review: The 37th Parallel by Ben Mezrich
The 37th Parallel: The Secret Truth Behind America's UFO Highway is a 2016 book by Ben Mezrich. Volunteer sheriff's deputy/microchip engineer Chuck Zukowski has been interested in UFOs since he was a teenager and often travels with his family to investigate reports of an extraterrestrial nature. When he discovers that mutilated livestock has been found on a ranch in Rush, Colorado, Chuck decides to get to the bottom of this incident and several other mutilations that have occurred around the "UFO Highway."
The 37th Parallel is a fascinating book, and I was surprised to learn that there have been more than 10,000 cases of unexplained animal mutilation over the past fifty years. I didn't know much about the UFO Highway, but basically it's the 37th degree of latitude and touches Colorado, Utah, New Mexico, Arizona, Kansas, and Oklahoma, and it has seen a fair amount of possible extraterrestrial activity (you can find info about some of these events that have occurred along the 37th Parallel here: http://nypost.com/2016/09/04/this-investigator-chases-aliens-along-americas-paranormal-highway/). The entire book was interesting, but the parts I enjoyed the most were the accounts of Chuck's visits to the Roswell UFO Museum and Research Center and the UFO Watchtower in Hooper, Colorado, since those are places I've also visited. : )

Book Review: Close Encounters of the Fatal Kind by Nick Redfern
My brother gave me Nick Redfern's Close Encounters of the Fatal Kind: Suspicious Deaths, Mysterious Murders, and Bizarre Disappearances in UFO History for Christmas last year, and I'm glad he did because it's one of the most fascinating books I've ever read. I've been interested in aliens/UFOs since childhood, and I've read a lot of books on the subject, so of course this one was right up my alley. Here are a few interesting things the book covers:
-Joao Prestes Filho, who basically melted in front of doctors in June 1947
-James Forrestal, the first U.S. Secretary of Defense...he died after supposedly jumping from the 16th floor of Bethesda Naval Hospital in 1949, but some believe that he may have been pushed because he knew too much about UFOs
-Pont-Saint-Esprit (France), where hundreds of people had hallucinations of terrifying creatures in August 1951
-JFK and his connection to UFOs: He'd told William Holden of the Air Force that he wanted to tell the public what he knew about the UFO cover-up, and rumor has it that there's a CIA document stating that JFK knew the truth about the Roswell crash and told Marilyn Monroe about it.
If you're interested in UFOs, you should check out Close Encounters of the Fatal Kind; it's one of the most interesting books I've read on the topic, and I really enjoyed reading it. Nick Redfern has written several books, and I'm definitely going to read some more of them. : )

Movie Spotlight: Lazer Team
Lazer Team is 2015 movie starring Burnie Burns, Gavin Free, Michael Jones, Colton Dunn, Allie DeBerry, and Alan Ritchson. Four men find a battle suit at a UFO crash site (from a crash that was caused by one of the men shooting fireworks) and must use the suit's powers to save the planet from evil aliens.
I enjoyed Lazer Team...it's funny, entertaining, and has aliens, so what's not to like? The four leads were great...especially Colton Dunn, who I loved as one of the hilarious animal control guys on Parks and Recreation. There's a sequel in the works, and I'll definitely watch it when it comes out on DVD. : )

The NYE Incidents
I went to the Taking Flight Comic Book Show in North Charleston a few weeks ago and came across a graphic novel with an extraterrestrial face on the cover; the comic was called The NYE Incidents, and of course I had to buy it. The NYE Incidents was created by Whitley Strieber and written by Craig Spector, and it was published in 2008. Medical Examiner Lynn Devlin is having a hard time figuring out what caused an alien abductee's mysterious death. After attending a UFO convention, Lynn suspects that a UFO cult may have killed the woman and tried to make it look like aliens were responsible.
Though I mostly read Archie comics, I enjoyed The NYE Incidents and would love to find more graphic novels in this vein. I'm used to reading graphic novels in color, but black and white illustrations are appropriate for The NYE Incidents and give the story a serious, creepy feel. A movie version is in the works (it was announced in 2009, so hopefully it's still happening) , and I definitely want to see it!

Encounters: U.F.O. Experience
A few days ago I found out about something called Encounters: U.F.O. Experience in Myrtle Beach, and since it's only a two-hour drive from Charleston, my husband and I decided to take a road trip the next day to see it.
The building is easy to spot since there's a UFO coming out of it. I so want to do that to my house. ; )
Encounters: U.F.O. Experience is full of information about UFO sightings and abductions throughout history, as well as replicas of a few extraterrestrials and an alien mothership.
Encounters: U.F.O. Experience is very interesting and informative, and I'm glad I found out about it before it closed. I liked the gift shop too...everything in it was pretty inexpensive, and I bought one of almost everything in it.
The museum is located at Broadway at the Beach, and tickets are $10 for adults, $8 for children and seniors, and free for children under four years old if you reserve or buy your tickets online before you go (tickets cost $14 for adults and seniors and $10 for children if you get them at the box office). It's only open until September 21st, so if you're interested in all things extraterrestrial, get there soon!

Movie Spotlight: Alien Tornado
Alien Tornado is a 2012 Syfy movie about aliens using tornadoes to take over the Earth...so of course there was no chance that I wasn't going to watch it. The movie stars Jeff Fahey, Stacey Asaro, Kari Wuhrer, David Jensen, and Willard E. Pugh, and the movie begins with Judd Walker (Jeff Fahey) creepily whispering to a horse until his daughter Kelly (Stacey Asaro) walks in and starts being a bitch because her dad isn't excited enough about her SAT scores. All is forgiven though after an electrical tornado comes out of nowhere and almost kills Judd. We then meet Gail Curtis (Kari Wuhrer), a storm chaser who has just gotten 132 tornado reports and wonders why the National Weather Service doesn't know about them; she receives a video of one of the strange tornadoes and goes to that town to meet the person who sent it to her (who proclaims to be her biggest fan and yells all of her lines for some reason...I guess even the aliens are annoyed with her since they get her with a tornado later in the movie). They spot an electrical tornado and decide to chase it, and soon they meet Judd and Kelly; Kelly is thrilled to meet Gail because apparently storm chasers are famous in this movie. (Can you name one storm chaser? Neither can I.) Before long, Kelly intercepts an alien signal and wants to prove that aliens are causing the tornadoes so she can get a scholarship and leave this lame town forever. (If she aced the SATs like she claimed, shouldn't that be enough to get her a scholarship?) A creepy government guy (David Jensen) sends his minions to track Kelly down and bring her to him, but she manages to escape and not end up being murdered by Creepy Government Guy.
Alien Tornado is about what you'd expect for a Syfy Original, and it's kind of boring for a movie about aliens attacking the Earth with tornadoes. I didn't enjoy watching this one nearly as much as I enjoyed watching and writing about Ghost Shark.
My rating: 5/10

Monsters and Mysteries in America: Appalachia
I was watching Destination America a few nights ago and discovered a paranormal show I hadn't watched before: Monsters and Mysteries in America. I watched a 2013 episode called "Appalachia," which focused on Sheepsquatch (I did not know that was a thing...how has there not been a Syfy Original movie about it?), UFOs/Little Green Men, and Mothman.
A creature named Sheepsquatch, “a giant sheep that’s gone savage,” has been spotted in Breckenridge, Kentucky. Paranormal researcher Rosemary Ellen Guiley describes
Sheepsquatch as having “wooly hair, it’s usually white or dirty white, huge jaws
and fangs, and a tail that usually has no fur on it.” In July 2004, locals Ricky Joyce and Dakota Cheeks went
hunting, and their first morning there, they found one of Ricky’s dogs in a
ditch with its head twisted almost all the way around (thanks for scarring me for life, Destination America!). They’d been hearing strange noises coming
from the top of the hill for months, so they decided to stake it out; when they
were in their camper that night, all of the dogs got scared and ran off, then
something started banging into the camper until it fell over. The following night, they got their guns and went
in search of Sheepsquatch; they saw something big (9 feet tall) and white
standing in the dark, and it went after them, so they shot at it and ran back
to the house. They are convinced it was
Sheepsquatch.
For more information about Sheepsquatch and pictures of
what it supposedly looks like, check out this link:

http://www.americanmonsters.com/site/2011/07/sheep-squatch-virginia-west-virgina-usa/
When Geraldine Sutton Stith was 8 years old, she learned that
her family had an encounter with the “Kentucky Green Men” at their farmhouse in
1955. One member of the family saw a UFO
when he went outside to get water, so he ran inside to tell everyone; when some
more family members went outside with him, the UFO was gone, but they saw
floating 3-foot tall creatures coming out of the woods. They ran inside to get some guns; one of the
extraterrestrials looked in the window, so the men started shooting. The creatures eventually left, and the police
were called, but they could find no evidence of bodies; they only found “a
glowing substance on the ground.”
Residents of Point Pleasant, West Virginia have been spotting Mothman since the late 1960s. Mothman has been described as “a cross between a man and an
alien-with wings and red eyes," and there was a 2002 movie made about the creature called The Mothman Prophecies (starring Richard Gere, Debra Messing, and Laura Linney). Faye Laport Dewitt encountered the monster when she was 13
or 14, and it changed her forever. After
a day at the movies, Faye’s brother decided that he wanted to go find Mothman
and prove that it was just a man in a costume, so he started driving with all
of their siblings in the car. Faye
noticed that he kept looking in her direction as he drove, and when she asked
why, he told her not to look; she looked anyway and saw Mothman flying right
outside the window. The car suddenly
came to a halt, and Mothman landed on the hood of the car, staring at them with
his glowing red eyes. Luckily for the
Laports, Mothman soon flew away. A few months later, Mothman was spotted on the Silver
Bridge; a few days after that, a stop light malfunctioned and caused cars to
pile onto the bridge, which then collapsed.
The cars fell into the water, then the bridge fell on top of them,
killing 46 people. Many people believe
that Mothman appeared on the bridge as an omen that something bad was going to
happen.
Monsters and Mysteries in America was an interesting show, and I'm definitely going to watch more episodes...I looked at the schedule and saw that there's an episode about a creature called Batsquatch, and you know I am watching that! I had heard of Mothman because I've seen The Mothman Prophecies, but I had never heard of Sheepsquatch until I watched this show, and Sheepsquatch sounds both hilarious and terrifying. ; )

Book Review: Messages by Stan Romanek
Messages: The World's Most Documented Extraterrestrial Contact Story by Stan Romanek with J. Allen Danelek tells the story of a man's repeated contact with extraterrestrials, and it's the most fascinating book I've ever read. In fact, it's so fascinating that I went on Amazon and bought another of Stan's books and one written by his wife Lisa before I was even finished with Messages. Stan Romanek is a former UFO skeptic who became a believer after catching a UFO on film on the way to Red Rocks Amphitheater in Colorado in late 2000. He saw his second UFO seven months later near the Pennsylvania-Ohio border; two passengers in Stan's car also witnessed it, and Stan got this sighting on film as well. In September 2001, Stan was abducted for the first time, and he would be abducted many more times over the next few years. In many cases, he would wake up outside his home with no way to get back inside and with no memory of what had happened, but he remembered what happened during the abductions when he underwent hypnosis.
The fact that I run a paranormal blog should make it pretty obvious that I already believe in aliens, but if I didn't, I think this book would've made me a believer. Stan's story is compelling, and the photographs in the book back up his story. There are pictures of marks Stan found on his body after his first abduction (which glowed under a black light) and of marks he found next to his knee after a later abduction where he came back with a completely healed ACL and hamstring, which had been hurting him so badly that he'd been planning on having surgery a few days later. There are also pictures of aliens that look pretty damn real to me; in one part of the book, Stan talks about how his digital camera went missing, and a few days later, Lisa found it hanging from the ceiling fan with a few extra pictures on it. When I turned the page and saw the picture Stan included, I actually gasped out loud at the extraterrestrial face I saw staring back at me. I'm sure there are many people out there who think Stan's story is a hoax, just like there are people who think a weather balloon crashed in Roswell in 1947. Some people wouldn't believe in extraterrestrials even if they met one because they just don't want to believe that they exist, and I don't understand why so many people think Earth is the only planet with life on it. We live in a huge universe...why would ours be the only planet that gets to have life? I recommend Messages to anyone who wants to read a fascinating story...if you already believe in aliens, this book will make your belief even stronger, and if you're a skeptic, this book just might turn you into a believer. Stan Romanek was very brave to share his story, and I'm grateful to him for doing it.

Thought of the Day: We can handle it.
If aliens exist, I don't think the government needs to keep hiding it from us. After everyone freaked out in 1938 when they thought War of the Worlds was real, I can understand why the government and military thought it was a good idea to say that what crashed in Roswell was a weather balloon (though threatening to kill people's entire families if they told the truth was a bit extreme), but now I think we can handle the truth. When I hear about the horrible things that humans do to each other, I have to wonder if extraterrestrials are any more of a threat than the people we might come across on any given day. Just when I think people can't get any worse, I hear something that proves me wrong, and I doubt that aliens (or any other otherworldly creature) would even be capable of doing things that are more evil than what the worst humans do on a daily basis. If aliens landed on Earth right now, I have a feeling that instead of everyone being terrified (unless they were trying to destroy major cities like they always do in the movies), people would be uploading pictures and videos of them to Facebook and YouTube...and you know those aliens would have a reality show contract by the end of the day. ; )

Thought of the Day: Belief
There are many who seem to think that only crazy people believe in extraterrestrials, yet millions of people believe in God and it's considered perfectly normal. I don't know of anyone who has seen God in person, but quite a few have seen aliens or UFOs, so that doesn't make sense to me at all.
