Blair Witch is a 2016 found footage movie starring James Allen McCune, Callie Hernandez, Brandon Scott, Corbin Reid, Wes Robinson, and Valorie Curry. It's the third installment of the Blair Witch series, following The Blair Witch Project and Blair Witch: Book of Shadows. When James Donahue (James Allen McCune) finds a video he believes to be of his sister Heather, who disappeared twenty years earlier while investigating the Blair Witch, he convinces his friends to help him search for her in the Black Hills Forest.
My main complaint about The Blair Witch Project was that the shaky camerawork made me dizzy and nauseous, and the same goes for Blair Witch. I thought it was a decent movie, but I didn't like it as much as the other two (I seem to be alone in this, but Book of Shadows is my favorite of the series...it was less boring than the others, and I don't remember it ever making me nauseous), and I had a hard time giving it my full attention.
I do think the actors were great though, and since the first movie in the series was known for casting unknown actors in the lead roles, I was surprised to see an actress I recognized: Valorie Curry, who I really enjoyed on The Following and House of Lies.

Movie Spotlight: Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension
Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension is a 2015 found footage movie starring Chris J. Murray, Brit Shaw, Dan Gill, Ivy George, Olivia Taylor Dudley, Michael Krawic, Chloe Csengery, Jessica Tyler Brown, Hallie Foote, and Don McManus. A new family moves into a house that stands on the spot where Katie and Kristi (from the other Paranormal Activity movies) grew up and finds a video camera that can see spirits, as well as some disturbing videotapes. They realize that something evil is in the house...and it wants their daughter.
Like the other Paranormal Activity movies, The Ghost Dimension succeeded in building tension and making me feel uneasy during the whole movie. In this one, we finally get to see the demon, but the effects in this part of the movie seem out of place in the Paranormal Activity series (everything in the other movies generally looks realistic, but the demon and some of the effects definitely did not). The Ghost Dimension was creepy, but it didn't make much sense. Despite the fact that this is supposedly the last Paranormal Activity movie, I hope they make another one since most of the fans seem unhappy with this movie being the end of the series.

Horror Movie Month: Paranormal Activity
Paranormal Activity is a 2009 found-footage movie written and directed by Oren Peli and starring Katie Featherston, Micah Sloat, Mark Fredrichs, Amber Armstrong, and Ashley Palmer. Katie (Katie Featherston) and Micah (Micah Sloat) move into a new house and soon begin experiencing paranormal activity (Hey, that's the name of the movie!) possibly caused by a demon that has been following Katie since childhood.
I first saw this movie not long after it came out on DVD, and I wasn't really scared while I was watching it, but I got scared afterward whenever I started thinking about it. For the first few nights after I saw it, I had a hard time falling asleep because I kept having thoughts like "What if the closet door just slides open by itself right now?" Most horror movies don't scare me at all since the things I read about in the news every day are just as bad as the things that happen in these movies, but when I do get scared, it's usually because there's a ghost or demon involved. Paranormal Activity scared me more than most movies have because watching it feels like watching real people go through something awful.
My rating: 7.5/10
Followed by:
Paranormal Activity 2
Paranormal Activity 3
Paranormal Activity 4
Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones
Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension

Horror Movie Month: Creep
Creep is a 2014 found footage movie directed by Patrick Brice, who co-stars in the movie with Mark Duplass (the two also wrote the script together). When Josef (Mark Duplass) posts a Craigslist ad in search of someone willing to spend a day filming him, videographer Aaron (Patrick Brice) answers his ad. Josef tells Aaron that he only has a few months to live and wants to record some videos for his unborn son since he won't be around to see him grow up. The filming starts in the bathtub, and of course things get weirder from there.
I enjoyed this movie and thought both actors gave impressive performances. I mostly know Mark Duplass from The League and The Mindy Project, so I had no idea he'd be so good at playing such a creepy character, but Josef was so creepy that I found myself looking over my shoulder quite a few times to make sure no one was sneaking up behind me. I also loved the ending and am really looking forward to the sequel. Creep is a realistic, unsettling horror movie (and the realistic ones usually scare me the most), and Josef is a fascinating character. People like Josef really exist, and they might live next door or work in your building...and that's terrifying.

Movie Spotlight: The Bell Witch Haunting
The Bell Witch Haunting is a 2013 found footage movie starring Laura Alexandra Ramos, Ted Jonas, Andrew Hellenthal, and Cat Alter. When I checked the movie's IMDB page, I thought it was probably a bad sign that Ramos is the only actor not listed as uncredited, but I watched it anyway. It's also a bad sign that the characters in the movie are having a pool party in Tennessee in January, but who says logic has a place in horror movies? ; ) The paranormal stuff makes more sense than the normal stuff in the movie...for example, why are girls taking their tops off at a wintertime pool party that some of their parents are attending, and why do the teenage girls in the movie sleep in just a bra and panties...in January? (And when did girls start sleeping in their underwear when they have a friend spend the night? I've had sleepovers with friends before, and we slept in pajamas like normal people.)
The movie is about the Sawyer family, who move to Adams, Tennessee and soon begin being harassed by the Bell Witch (a paranormal entity who haunted the property in the 1800s), probably because the family is so irritating that she just wants to get them out of the house so a less annoying family can move in. Less than half an hour into the movie, I was already rooting for the Bell Witch to kill these people. The movie had more funny moments than scary moments, the funniest being when the text "January 21th 2011" and January 22th 2011" appeared on the screen. Really?! Even little kids know that it should be "21st" and "22nd"...and that there should be a comma between the date and the year.
My rating: 4/10 (I was going to give it a 5 since it made me laugh, but I had to take a point off for the 21th and 22th thing.)
