Ghost Hunters: Due Date With Death

I worked at a library for eight years, so when I saw an episode of Ghost Hunters called “Due Date With Death” listed on my Direct TV guide, I had to watch it.  The episode first aired in November 2012 on the Syfy network and is from the show’s eighth season.  This episode features TAPS founder Jason Hawes, tech manager Steve Gonsalves, investigators Dave Tango, Britt Griffith, K.J. McCormick, Adam Berry, and Ashley Troub.

The TAPS team goes to Rochester, New York to investigate the Rochester Public Library.  At the library, Christine Ridarsky tells them that there have been reports of paranormal activity in the library for fifteen years, after the library was remodeled.  She says that employees have seen shadows and heard footsteps, voices, and moaning.  Motion alarms have been triggered after hours, but when the police showed up, the building was locked and no one was inside.  The team thinks the paranormal activity may be connected to the death of a librarian (Frank), who had a heart attack there and later died, and a woman who drowned and was found in the aqueduct underneath the library in 1902.  Christine shows them video evidence of a heavy door opening and closing by itself, which they have caught on tape three times; the team sets up some cameras pointing at that door.  Security guard Karen Yacono saw someone’s head peeking out from the stacks one night, so Britt Griffith and K.J. McCormick set up a thermal imaging camera in that area.

In the third floor office area, Jason and Steve see a shadow when they are checking out the door (I’d like to point out that the door says 333 on the outside…which is half of 666!).  Steve asks Frank if he’s there, and they hear an “echoey voice” moaning and footsteps behind them.  While they are trying to find where the voice came from, they hear a noise, and after testing some chairs, Steve figures out that the sound they heard was someone (or something) sitting in one of the chairs.  Britt and K.J. go to the Director’s office on the third floor and notice that the door is held open with a doorstop, so it shouldn’t be able to close without someone undoing the doorstop; when they enter the office, their equipment sounds, and the door closes all by itself.  They review the tape to make sure that Britt didn’t accidentally nudge the door and see that he was not close enough to have caused the door to close, and their equipment is now dead.  Steve and Dave go to the main floor to try to see what could be causing the shadows the employees have seen.  They notice that there’s a restaurant across the street that stays open late, and they wonder if cars could be causing the shadows, so Steve gets his car and tests it out.  Dave tells him that when Steve pulled out of the parking lot across the street, he could see his shadow as the headlights illuminated the window.

Adam and Ashley check out the upper stacks and set up devices that will go off if a shadow passes in front of them.  One of them sounds, and Adam asks if it’s Frank; they hear a voice in response and contact the rest of the team to make sure none of them are also in the stacks.  They listen to the recording and think the voice is saying something about finding books, but can’t hear it well enough to be sure.  In the lower stacks, Steve and Dave conduct an EMF reading row by row.  Steve hears a noise that sounds like something crawling or traveling, and Dave finds a block of Styrofoam on the ground; he tosses it back on the ground to see what sound it makes, and Steve says it sounds like the sound he heard.  Britt and K.J. head to the main floor and soon hear footsteps and voices; they check with the other team members to make sure none of them are on that floor.  Britt sees something go into a nearby room, so he goes into the room, and no one is there.  They hear noises that K.J. describes as sounding like “somebody taking and putting books up onto the shelf.”  Dave and Ashley go to the third floor office area to check out the door.  Dave opens the windows to see if the breeze can cause the door to open, and Ashley notices that the door she closed is now open, so they deduce that if both windows are open, the breeze is strong enough to cause the door to open.

Jason joins Steve in the lower stacks, and Jason jumps out at Steve and startles him.  They hear a noise and ask Britt and K.J. to see if they can get into the aqueduct to investigate.  Britt goes down there and is not happy about all the spiders that are down there with him.  K.J. sends some cables down, so they can film in the aqueduct, and they attempt to contact Mrs. Young, the woman who drowned down there.  They tell her that they believe she may have been pushed and ask if she’s met Frank, but she does not respond.  Jason and Steve ask Ashley to meet them upstairs and tell her that there’s a TAPS group in California, where she’s from, and say that they think it would be good for her to go train with that group.  The team reviews all of the footage and sees something interesting on the DVR Britt and K.J. had set up in the upper stacks: a shadow peeking around the stacks!  Jason tells Christine that since this figure didn’t show up on the thermal imaging camera, but did show up on the DVR, it could mean that some of the spirit’s energy may have dissipated if it has been there for a long time.
I really liked this episode of Ghost Hunters, and I’m glad that none of this stuff ever happened at my library.

Ghost Files by Jason Hawes and Grant Wilson

I've watched a few episodes of Ghost Hunters and have enjoyed the show, so when I saw that the library had Ghost Files: The Collected Cases From Ghost Hunting and Seeking Spirits by Jason Hawes and Grant Wilson (with Michael Jan Friedman), I had to read it.  Jason and Grant run The Atlantic Paranormal Society (T.A.P.S.), and this book showcases some of the interesting experiences they've had while investigating the paranormal.  Jason started having paranormal experiences at age 20 when he dated a woman who practiced Reiki, which deals with manipulating life-force energy.  After six months, he started seeing mists, "out of which emanated a dim light, and then out of the light came other things-including see-through animals and full-body human apparitions" (page 6).  Jason soon started the Rhode Island Paranormal Society (R.I.P.S.), and Grant contacted him about improving the R.I.P.S. website; they started talking, and Grant revealed that he had also had paranormal experiences, so they joined forces and founded T.A.P.S.  I enjoyed reading about all of the cases in this book, but these were my favorites:

-"Possessed": When the T.A.P.S. team arrived to help a child in need, "nine-year-old Emily was dragging furniture around her bedroom and swearing like a sailor" (page 46).  Her older sister admitted that she had been using a Ouija board (never a good idea), so the team called in a priest.  After the priest performed an exorcism, Jason and Grant removed the Ouija board from the house, and the demonic activity came to an end.

-"The Stanley Hotel":  This hotel was the inspiration for The Overlook Hotel in The Shining, so it should be no surprise that this place has its share of spooky happenings.  During the investigation, Jason woke up to the sound of the closet door opening, then awoke again to banging sounds in the closet, while in Grant's room, the curtains repeatedly opened by themselves.  In another room, a "table lifted up and slammed down-right along with the chair that was standing beside it" (page 260).  (I don't know about you guys, but if I had seen that, I would've peed my pants.)

If you're a fan of Ghost Hunters, you should definitely read this book, and if you've never watched the show, but you like reading about true paranormal encounters, you'll probably enjoy Ghost Files and might be inspired to start watching Ghost Hunters.

Ghost Hunters: Titanic Terror

I recently started watching Ghost Hunters, but there are so many episodes that I decided to just watch the ones that are about places I've visited or are just interested in.  Since I went to the Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta few years ago, I thought the Season 5 episode where the TAPS (The Atlantic Paranormal Society) team investigates paranormal activity in the aquarium's Titanic exhibit would be pretty interesting...and it was!  The exhibit is a traveling one, and paranormal activity seems to follow it wherever it goes...people have reported seeing shadows while in the exhibit, hearing footsteps, and feeling fingers scape their scalps.  Jason Hawes, Grant Wilson, and Steve Gonsalves meet with Meghann Gibbons, Director of Public Relations, as soon as they arrive at the aquarium, and she tells them that many of the aquarium's volunteers have reported strange occurences in the Titanic exhibit.  For example, volunteer Margaret Mourino sensed a presence behind her in the iceberg exhibit, then felt something pressing on her scalp.

Jason and Grant begin the investigation in the cabins exhibit, where they see shadows and experience a sudden drop in temperature; when they move to the iceberg exhibit, they encounter a five-foot tall cold spot, and Jason feels something tugging his sweatshirt.  They soon move to the artifacts room, where Grant sees a shadow he thinks is Jason, but when he sees  the beam of Jason's flashlight in another room, he realizes that he was mistaken.  When Jason joins him, he also sees the figure and chases it, but no one is there.  When the men get up to leave, Grant feels a hand on his shoulder, pushing him back down.  Dave Tango and Steve review the footage and hear a voice during the part of the recording where Jason and Grant ask the presence to knock twice if it wants them to leave; it sounds like the voice is saying "No, please wait."

This episode wasn't too creepy, but I'm glad that the Titanic exhibit was not at the aquarium when I visited...and if I'm ever thinking about going to an aquarium and then find out that they have the Titanic exhibit, I won't be going there. : )

Ghost Hunters: The Henson Studios and the "Manson" House

Yesterday I watched a season 3 Ghost Hunters episode called "The Henson Studios and the 'Manson' House," and it was pretty creepy!  The Atlantic Paranormal Society (TAPS) gets a call from a man who lives next to where the Manson Family murders took place, and since the house where it occurred is no longer there, the man believes that the victims are now haunting his house.  The TAPS team meets with David Oman, the homeowner, and he tells them that strange things have been going on since he was building the house...a construction worker said that he heard voices and footsteps on the stairs that kept getting louder and then stopped; when he felt a cold breeze on his shoulders, he left and didn't return for six weeks.  David tells the team that one night he saw a ghost standing next to his bed, pointing toward the driveway; when David was researching the Manson murders a few months later, he realized that the ghost was Jay Sebring, one of Manson's victims.  The team calls in fellow investigator Chris Fleming since he has some equipment that they do not have, and they think it would be useful for this investigation.  Steve Gonsalves and Dave Tango investigate the guest room; Steve asks the spirit to give them a sign that it's there, and the blinds start moving.  Jason Hawes, Grant Wilson, and Chris take the living room and also ask for a sign; they hear a loud noise in the kitchen and cannot figure out what made the sound.  They then move to the master bedroom, where they feel cold spots, and the K-2 meter, which measures energy, starts going crazy.  They change the batteries to see if it's causing a malfunction and then start asking yes or no questions, hoping that a spirit will communicate with them by making the K-2 meter blink; they find out that the spirit who is communicating with them is male, he was murdered by the Manson Family, and there are more spirits in the house.  Chris asks if the spirit is Jay Sebring, and the K-2 meter blinks once for yes; they also learn that Sharon Tate is one of the spirits who is haunting the house.  They ask the spirit to prove he's there by making the temperature drop from 66 degrees to 62 degrees; the temperature in front of the thermometer changes, but the temperature in the rest of the room stays the same.  When reviewing the recordings from when Donna LaCroix and Steve were using the EVP meter in the living room, they hear a female voice answering Donna's questions; they did not hear this voice when they were in the room.

Next the TAPS team goes to the Jim Henson Studios, where studio employee Johan Filla says he saw a dark figure in a top hat on the roof one night; when he went to the roof to investigate, no one was there.  There have been many ghostly sightings there, including when one employee saw a woman disappear into a wall.  On the soundstage, Jason and Grant get a thermal hit that looks like a female body floating three feet off the ground, and in an area known as "The Barn," Dave and Donna hear a "Shh!," and Donna hears a voice whisper "Tango, Tango."  I was hoping that the paranormal activity was really The Muppets coming to life, but no such luck. ; )

The Manson Family part of the episode was pretty creepy, but the Jim Henson Studios wasn't too scary...I don't really want to meet any ghosts though, so I'll probably never take a tour of the studio, even though I'm a little obsessed with The Muppets.

Ghost Hunters: Haunted by Heroes

I'd never watched Ghost Hunters, but I thought that since I'm running a paranormal blog now, it might be a good idea to start.  My first episode was season eight's  "Haunted by Heroes," which was filmed in my hometown.

The TAPS (The Atlantic Paranormal Society) team has been contacted by Mac Burdette, the executive director of Patriots Point in Mt. Pleasant, SC, about the paranormal activity on the USS Yorktown, an aircraft carrier that is now a museum ship.  During World War II and Vietnam, 141 men died on the Yorktown, and people have reported seeing mysterious figures climbing ladders, apparitions that can be seen so clearly that it's clear they're wearing USS uniforms, doors slamming in areas where no one goes, and strange noises and voices.  Burdette wants to know if the ship is being haunted by soldiers, so they can be shown the proper respect.

The TAPS team's lead investigators, Jason Hawes and Grant Wilson, investigate the museum area of the ship and hear odd noises.  When they watch the footage they have just shot, they see a figure stand up and walk out of the shot...and of course, there was no one in the room with them!  Later, Jason and Grant move to the second deck and hear footsteps going down a hallway; they follow, but never find the source of the footsteps. Not long after, Grant feels something touch him on the chest, as if it is trying to pass by him.  Investigators Amy Bruni and Adam Berry head to the flight deck, where they see someone walking. They chase him and never find him; they contact the rest of the crew to see if any of them were on the flight deck, but everyone is accounted for and none of them were in that area.  Amy and Adam then go to what Amy describes as "the bowels of the ship" and set up a shadow detector, which will make a sound if anything moves over it; they leave the room and soon hear footsteps and voices...and then the shadow detector goes off!  In the engine room, investigators Britt Griffith and K.J. McCormick hear footsteps on the metal grate above them.  The TAPS team returns to their headquarters, analyze their evidence, and conclude that the ghosts who are haunting the Yorktown are spirits who belong there.

I enjoyed this episode of Ghost Hunters and will definitely be watching more of them.  I can't say for sure whether everything on the show is real, but I'll be avoiding the Yorktown for the rest of my life anyway. ; )
