Movie Spotlight: Before I Wake

Before I Wake is a 2016 movie starring Kate Bosworth, Thomas Jane, Jacob Tremblay, Annabeth Gish, and Dash Mihok. Jessie (Kate Bosworth) and Mark (Thomas Jane) adopt Cody (Jacob Tremblay), an orphaned 8-year-old boy and soon discover that his dreams actually happen in reality while he sleeps. Sometimes Cody dreams about butterflies or Jessie and Mark's deceased son, but when he has nightmares, a horrifying creature known as the Canker Man terrorizes everyone around him.

I saw the trailer for Before I Wake a few years ago and thought it looked like something I would enjoy, so I was happy to see that Netflix had the movie. Before I Wake has a good story, impressive visual effects, and great performances from everyone (especially Bosworth and Tremblay). The ending was surprising and emotional, and I liked the explanation for why Cody kept dreaming about the Canker Man...and if you make it through that scene without getting a little teary-eyed, you might be dead inside. ; )

My rating: 7.5/10

Horror Movie Month: The Mist

The Mist is a 2007 movie written and directed by Frank Darabont and starring Thomas Jane, Marcia Gay Harden, Laurie Holden, Andre Braugher, and Toby Jones. The movie is based on a novella by Stephen King, and it's my favorite movie based on his work. When a strange mist envelops a small Maine town after a bad storm, the townspeople must fight for survival against the monsters the mist brought with it.

I really like The Mist and thought all of the performances were great...especially Marcia Gay Harden as religious fanatic Mrs. Carmody. (I think I would've taken my chance with the monsters rather than stay trapped in a grocery store with this insufferable woman.) The movie's ending is heartbreaking, and it's one that pissed a lot of people off, but it's an ending I've never forgotten and probably never will. The monsters are pretty scary and realistic (they look like giant insects, and the big ones can rip a man in half), but if you really hate spiders, you might want to skip this one. ; )

Upcoming Paranormal Movies

When I saw Poltergeist in the theater, I saw a few trailers for paranormal movies I definitely want to see. The first one was for The Gallows, which is about high school students trying to stage a production of a play twenty years after the lead actor in a previous production was killed during the performance. You can watch the trailer here:

The other one was for Before I Wake, which stars Kate Bosworth and Thomas Jane as a couple who adopt a child and then find out that he never wants to sleep because all of his dreams (and nightmares, of course) come true. This sounds like a great concept for a movie, and you can see the trailer for yourself here:
